Comprehensive Diagnostic and Treatment Options

The Valley Radiation Therapy staff

The Anchorage and Valley Radiation Therapy Centers offers the full range of diagnostic imaging and radiation therapy technologies. This allows your radiation therapy team to develop and carry out the most effective treatment plan possible. We provide this state-of-the-art care using the following technologies and services:

External Beam Radiation Therapy (EBRT directs a beam (or multiple beams) of radiation through the skin to the cancer and the immediate surrounding area. These high-energy x-rays destroy both the main tumor and any nearby cancer cells.

3-D Conformal Radiation Therapy uses a special computed tomography (CT) scan and a targeting computer to precisely deliver External Beam Radiation Therapy. The use of 3D-CRT appears to reduce the chance of injury to nearby body structures.

Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) uses computer generated images and treatment planning to deliver high doses of radiation to a tumor while minimizing the amount of radiation to normal, surrounding tissues.

Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT) compares images taken at the time of treatment to images taken during the planning phase using a computer. This allows for more accurate delivery of radiation to the target tissue.

Brachytherapy refers to treatment in which radioactive material is placed directly into or near the cancer. It is delivered in a number of ways including “seeds” or “implants.” Brachytherapy has many uses including treatment of prostate cancer and for Partial Breast Irradiation (for women who choose breast conservation rather than a mastectomy).

  • Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT) allows for non-invasive treatment of lung tumors and other selected conditions. SBRT delivers a high dose of radiation to a highly defined target.  The course of treatment is typically given in 5 separate doses.
  • Large-Bore Digital CT Simulation captures high-quality, low-dose diagnostic images. This advanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) equipment provides a larger and shorter opening for patients who are claustrophobic, or anxious.
